Who is a Mathematics-Statistics major?

  • Please note that being a Mathematics-Statistics major means that you must take at least up to multivariable calculus – so quite a few math courses.

What can I do with a Mathematics-Statistics major?

How can I declare a major in Mathematics-Statistics?

  • Please download forms from the Academic Services Center website:


    1. You may use the Major Change Form to change your major within CLAS. Use and follow instructions on this form if you are currently in a different CLAS major and wish to change your major to Mathematics-Statistics.
    2. You may use the Program(School/College) Change Form to change into a CLAS major. Use and follow instructions on this form if you are currently in ACES, or in a different School/College and wish to change your major to Mathematics-Statistics.
  • Once you are accepted as a Mathematics-Statistics major, you will be assigned a faculty advisor from the Mathematics Department and a faculty advisor from the Statistics Department.
  • The Math advisor gives you the Plan of Study, serves as your primary advisor, and lifts your advising hold each semester. However, you must get course advising from BOTH your Math and Stat advisors before the Registration Period in mid-Fall for the Spring semester and in mid-Spring for the Fall semester in order to discuss what courses to take.
  • Both the Math and Stat advisors must sign your final Plan of Study after verifying through Degree Progress on Peoplesoft whether all the requirements have been met prior to graduation.
  • Please refer to the Sequences of Statistics Courses for the Mathematics-Statistics major before your initial meeting with your statistics advisor.

What is the role of my Statistics advisor in helping me with course selection?

  • Your Statistics faculty advisor will serve as your point of contact for questions on academic matters relating to statistics courses, internships, research, potential graduate school applications, etc.
  • At your initial meeting, your statistics faculty advisor will go over with you the overall plan of statistics courses to be taken during each semester so that you may graduate on time – following the guideline in the Sequences of Mathematics-Statistics Courses.  Both you and your advisor will keep a copy of this course plan. It will be extremely useful to refer to this plan each time you contact your advisor about course advising. Your statistics faculty advisor might sometimes find it necessary or advisable to revise/adjust the plan to help you track yourself towards graduation.
  • Related Courses: you need not worry about filling Related course credits, because Mathematics serves as a related area for Statistics and vice versa.
  • You may wish to print out the Plan of Study, and fill this in as you go along your coursework. Get it signed by your Math and Stat faculty advisors and the Undergraduate Program Director or Head in Mathematics, before you submit it to the UConn Registrar’s Office a few weeks prior to your graduation.
  • Each semester until you graduate, you will contact your faculty advisors for advising appointments. Your faculty advisors will then go over your course selections for the major, and the Math advisor lift the advising hold so that you can register for courses. Keep in mind that your faculty advisor cannot lift the Bursar hold.
  • Although your faculty advisors might be able to help with questions regarding your GER courses, you may also refer to advisors at the CLAS Advisory Center, who are experts on help with such queries.
  • Your faculty advisors will have access to your academic information on the View My Advisees page on PeopleSoft in order to help you, and will access Degree Progress to make sure you have fulfilled all graduation requirements before signing the filled Plan of Study for submission prior to your graduation.

What are my responsibilities with respect to enrolling in courses?

  • The list and Sequences of Mathematics-Statistics Courses are detailed under this link. With help from your faculty advisors before the Registration Periods (in mid-Fall for the Spring semester and in mid-Spring for the Fall semester), choose appropriate courses. Please be aware of course pre-requisites and take courses in the right order.
  • It is your responsibility to make sure that your advising hold is lifted so that you may register on time. Until the hold is lifted, you will be unable to register. In some cases, you may also have a Bursar hold in addition to the Advisor hold, and need to get that cleared. Please keep in mind that some courses tend to fill up very quickly, so be prompt.

Will I be able to get into my Statistics courses as a major?

  • The Statistics Department holds a number of seats in reserve for majors and minors in Statistics. Even so, with the increased demand for statistics courses, you must try and enroll as quickly as possible when your registration period opens.
  • Sometimes, you may not be allowed to register because of a “prerequisite not met” complaint, although you might have transferred that course in perhaps. Immediately write to the instructor and copy the Undergraduate Program Director. If your request is valid, a permission number will usually take care of this problem.

Can I use transfer credits towards my major ?

  • Except in special cases to be determined on a case by case basis, you may not transfer in credits towards the upper division major courses. Requests, with supporting material may be sent to the Undergraduate Program Director in Statistics for consideration.

Can I do Course Credit by Examination for any Statistics course?

  • The Department of Statistics does not currently allow for Course Credit by Examination.

What are my responsibilities towards graduation as a Statistics major?

  • It is student’s responsibility to complete all the requirements prior to graduation. You should go into Peoplesoft and verify through Degree Progress that you have completed all graduation requirements. This includes all GER requirements, requirements for the Mathematics-Statistics Major and Related courses, and courses for your Minor requirements (if you opt to do a Minor).
  • In order to graduate, your major GPA must be 2.0 or above. If not, you must take courses in the major to bring up your GPA.
  • To graduate, you must complete the Major Plan of Study, get it signed by your faculty advisors in Mathematics and Statistics and by the Undergraduate Program Director or Head in Mathematics, and submit to the UConn Registrar’s Office.
  • If you opt to do a Minor, you must contact the faculty advisor in the department in which you are doing a Minor and follow the instructions from that department. Prior to graduation, you must also submit to the Registrar’s Office, a Minor Plan of Study signed by an advisor from the department in which you are doing a Minor.

What is Statistics Departmental Assessment?

  • In your final semester, you will be asked to complete a Statistics Departmental Assessment prior to graduation. You will receive an email regarding this from the Undergraduate Program Director in Statistics – please comply. Questions will be administered and collected by by Tracy Burke in the Statistics office. This is NOT an assessment of the student, but of the department, for its teaching effectiveness.

Can I do an Internship in Statistics?

  • Yes, you can do an internship and get credits towards your major via STAT 4190. Field Study Internship can be done either semester, upon availability; credits and hours are by arrangement. Usually, students register for 3 credits, and may also receive payment. Students often do this during the summer before their senior year, provided they have completed the necessary prerequisites.
  • Prerequisites: Completion of Freshman – Sophomore General CLAS requirements. Completion with a grade of “C” or better of (STAT 3025 or STAT 3375) and (STAT 3115 or STAT 3515). This course cannot be repeated for credit.
  • Internship is supervised field work relevant to some area of Probability or Statistics, typically carried out outside the Statistics Department. The internship may be with another academic department, a regional industry, a government agency, a non-profit organization, etc.
  • In order to find a suitable internship, you may seek help from the Statistics Department, or from UConn Career Services , or from the American Statistical Association website
  • Once you secure an internship, you may register for STAT 4190, with a permission number from the faculty coordinator in the Statistics department (the Undergraduate Program Director serves as faculty coordinator for all students registered for STAT 4190). With help from your external supervisor, you must submit a proposal on the project, highlighting the statistical components.
  • Upon completion of the internship, you must submit a detailed report to the faculty coordinator, who will also seek a performance feedback from your external supervisor. Based on these evaluations, you will be assigned a final grade of S (satisfactory) or U (unsatisfactory) by the faculty coordinator.
  • Note: Credits from STAT 4190 may count towards the 24 major credits; however, your GPA will not be affected.

What is STAT 4389: Undergraduate Research?

  • You may take this course either semester, for three credits; hours are determined by arrangement with a faculty. This course is ONLY OPEN with consent of a faculty member who is willing to mentor you, based on your extremely good academic performance in the regular statistics courses. STAT 4389 may be repeated for credit.
  • This course involves supervised research in probability or statistics with a faculty member from the Statistics Department.
  • Discuss your interest with your faculty advisor, who may seek input from Statistics Department faculty members or the Undergraduate Program Director to help you find a research mentor.
  • A final written report and oral presentation are required. The student will be assigned a final letter grade.
  • It is possible to secure support from the Office of Undergraduate Research as well as to write a peer reviewed article based on outstanding research.

Can I do a regular course as an Independent Study?

  • The Statistics faculty are in general unable to offer a routinely offered course as an independent study. We reserve an Independent Study for a topic that is outside the stream of courses regularly offered in the Statistics department.
